A Life in Peking Opera

Qian Qiming performing

Mr. Qian Qiming graduated from the Beijing Opera School and is a member of the China Dramatists Association. During his schooling, he studied successively under teachers Shen Yubin, Shen Youliang, and Bai Zonghao. After graduation, he was assigned to the Beijing Peking Opera Theater, where he became a disciple of the renowned Peking Opera artist Mr. He Shunxin.

He successively served as jinghu accompanist of the Beijing Peking Opera Theater, director of the Beijing Fenglei Peking Opera Troupe, and executive vice principal of the Beijing Peking Opera Theater Training School.

錢啓明先生,畢業於北京戲曲學校,中國戲劇家協會會員。在校期間,先後師承沈玉斌、沈幼良、白宗浩等老師。畢業後,分配到北京京劇院,拜著名京劇藝術家何順信先生為師。

歷任北京市京劇院琴師,北京風雷京劇團團長,北京京劇院培訓學校常務副校長。

National Broadcast Opening Piece中央人民廣播戲曲聯歡會

Composed the opening piece Xi Ying Chun for the Central People’s Broadcasting Station’s Traditional Opera Gala; during the Asian Games, composed We Share the Same Sun.

為中央人民廣播戲曲聯歡會譜寫開幕曲《喜迎春》;亞運會期間為著名主持人趙忠祥譜寫《我們有共同的太陽》。

Setting Chairman Mao’s Poems to Music毛主席詩詞譜曲

To mark the centenary of Chairman Mao’s birth, set five of his poems — including Qinyuanchun: Snow and Qinyuanchun: Changsha — to Peking Opera melody, performed by leading artists and released on cassette by Central Broadcasting Audio-Visual Publishing House.

為紀念毛主席一百週年誕辰,將《沁園春.雪》、《沁園春.長沙》等五首詩詞譜以京劇音樂旋律,由著名京劇演員演唱,並由中央廣播音像出版社發行盒式錄音帶。

Television, Composition & Taiwan Residency電視、創作與臺灣講學

Performed a solo jinghu rendition of Xi Ying Chun on China Education Television’s Spring Festival Gala; composed The Lights of Beijing; traveled to Taiwan for a five-month teaching residency at the Taipei Fu Hsing Opera School.

於中國教育電視臺春節聯歡晚會親自京胡獨奏《喜迎春》;譜寫《北京的燈》;赴臺灣臺北復興劇校講學五個月,並為辜振甫、焦仁和等人操琴。

2004

Kronos Quartet, San Francisco與克諾斯四重奏樂團合作

On October 5, joined the world-renowned Kronos Quartet at the Herbst Theatre, performing an excerpt from Yang Men Nü Jiang (“Tan Gu”) on jinghu, to sustained applause from mainstream audiences and musicians.

10月5日於舊金山赫爾伯特大劇場,與世界著名的克諾斯四重奏樂團合作演出《楊門女將.探谷》一折,親自演奏京胡,獲得熱烈掌聲。

京劇是一門綜合藝術,包括表演、音樂、舞蹈、美術,以及其他門類的藝術或科學藝術……四功裏面唱功為首,而五法中口法是第一位,足見唱腔藝術及其技巧在京劇表演藝術中的重要性。
Peking Opera is a synthesis of performance, music, dance, and visual art. Among the “Four Skills” (singing, recitation, acting, combat), singing comes first — underscoring the centrality of vocal style and technique to the art form.
京劇唱腔的技巧大致可以概括為三點——唱的是字,用的是氣,動的是情。以字帶腔,以字帶勁,以字帶氣,則是京劇演唱區別於西洋歌曲的關鍵。
The technique of Peking Opera vocal style can be summarized in three points: singing is about the words, breath is the tool, and emotion is what moves. Letting the words carry the melody, the strength, and the breath is what distinguishes Peking Opera singing from Western song.
琴與腔,琴師與演員相輔相成,相得益彰,使京劇藝術的表現力不斷發展豐富。我們應該向先輩學習,為京劇藝術事業的發展,為弘揚中華文化而不斷努力。
The fiddle and the vocal line, the accompanist and the performer, complement and elevate one another — continually enriching the expressive power of Peking Opera. We should learn from our forebears and work tirelessly for the development of this art and the flourishing of Chinese culture.
